Presenter: Mark Gronquist, Recreation Director, TSBVI

Time: 1:30-3:30 PM

One of the most critical areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum is Recreation and Leisure. Without skills to participate in physical, social and recreational activities, the life of a student with visual impairments is diminished. This is often the way friends are made, employment connections are made, and overall health and functioning are improved. This broadcast will offer ideas for adapting recreational and leisure activities so that students with visual impairments may participate more fully in these activities.

Game of Life: Introduction

Location: American Foundation for the Blind, Dallas, TX

Presenters: TSBVI Outreach Staff, AFB Staff and Mentors

This is a special by-invitation-only training for transition-aged students 14-22, their parents, and VI staff. In this special training series participants will attend two face-to-face workshops at the American Foundation of the Blind Center for Low Vision in Dallas and participate in various distance learning training activities. Students will participate in “reality challenges” focused on career skills, daily living skills, and skills needed to apply for and attend college. Some of these challenges will be “virtual” challenges utilizing the web, blogs, email and online discussion. Other challenges take place in the “real world” during the face-to-face workshops and in the student’s local community. Each student will be paired with a mentor and connected to peers for sharing and support, primarily through use of their computers and other technology. Parents and educators will receive information and training to learn how to support their student’s pursuit of adult independence.

The goals of this workshop are (1) to help students have opportunities to learn and practice skills of independence in safe and supportive environments, and (2) to give parents and teachers tools and support to more comfortably move into the role of “doing with, NOT for” the young adult who is learning to become independent. Participants must commit to attending all four training events in order to participate.

If you are interested in receiving more detailed information about this event or would like to request an invitation to participate, please contact Kate Hurst at 512-206-9224 or KateHurst@tsbvi.edu.

Game of Life: The Final Challenge to Independence a Face-to-Face Workshop at AFB in Dallas

Presented by TSBVI Outreach Staff, AFB Staff, and Adult Mentors

This is a special by-invitation-only training for transition-aged students, their parents, and VI staff. In this special training series participants will attend two face-to-face workshops at the American Foundation of the Blind Center for Low Vision in Dallas and participate in various distance learning training activities. Students ages 14-22 will participate in “reality challenges” focused on career skills, daily living skills, and skills needed to apply for and attend college.
